Surgical Instructions at South Palm Dental
Helping You Heal Safely and Comfortably
At South Palm Dental, your comfort and recovery are our top priorities. Whether you’ve had a root canal, a dental implant, or multiple tooth extractions, following your post-operative care instructions is essential to ensure optimal healing and prevent complications. Below, you’ll find detailed surgical aftercare guidelines tailored to specific procedures. These instructions are general—your dentist or dental assistant will provide personalized instructions during your visit.

Before Your Surgery

To prepare for any procedure involving sedation or anesthesia:
- Refrain from smoking for at least 12 hours prior.
- Arrange transportation: A responsible adult must accompany you and drive you home.
- Remove all accessories, including contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures.
- Discuss medications: Let your dentist know if you’re taking any regular prescriptions to verify whether they should be continued before surgery.
These simple steps help minimize surgical risks and support a smooth experience.
Aftercare Instructions by Procedure
Root Canal Therapy
Mild soreness is normal for several days. Avoid chewing on the treated side to allow the temporary restoration to set. Complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed. Contact us immediately if you experience increasing pain, swelling, a reaction to medication, or if the temporary filling comes out.

Scaling and Root Planing
Expect slight gum tenderness. Rinse gently 2–3 times a day with warm salt water (1 tsp salt in 8 oz water). Brush and floss gently to avoid irritating healing gums. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relief can help with swelling. Avoid hard or sticky foods for 2–3 days.
White Fillings (Bonding)
Sensitivity to hot and cold is common after anesthesia wears off. Avoid extreme temperatures in food or drink for a few days. Your fillings will function normally once settled. Maintain regular brushing and flossing.
Veneers
Until your permanent veneer is placed, treat the temporary restoration with care. Avoid sticky foods and floss gently to avoid dislodging the temporary. Brush carefully around the area. Once the permanent veneer is placed, you can resume normal function.
Crowns and Bridges
If you’ve received a temporary crown or bridge, avoid sticky or chewy foods. Brush gently and floss carefully to avoid loosening it. Once the permanent restoration is placed, resume normal hygiene and diet practices.
Extractions
After a tooth extraction:
- Bite down on the gauze pad for at least 45 minutes post-surgery.
- Rest and avoid lying flat—keep your head elevated with a pillow.
- Avoid strenuous activity and do not rinse or use a straw for 24 hours.
- Apply ice packs to the area in 20-minute intervals for swelling.
- Take prescribed medications as directed.
- If bleeding persists beyond 24 hours, contact us immediately.

Multiple Tooth Extractions

- Swelling may peak around the eyes within 48 hours.
- Bruising or discoloration is normal and can be managed with warm compresses.
- Dry, cracked mouth corners and sore throat may occur temporarily.
- You’ll have a follow-up visit within 48 hours to monitor healing.
- Stick to soft foods and stay hydrated.
Common Post-Surgical Concerns
- Bad Breath: May occur temporarily due to restricted brushing or healing tissue.
- Gum Recession & Sensitivity: Avoid acidic foods and maintain gentle hygiene.
- Abscesses & Tooth Pain: Call our office if pain worsens or drainage occurs.
- Tooth Loss Preparation: Discuss restorative options such as implants or dentures.
